Probably would've benefitted from another draft or two for the screenplay. At least Nielsen's character is actually pretty well written, but the rest of the movie is kind of off somehow. Decent but in no way memorable or even that good.

Stir Crazy 1980
This movie had quite the troubled production and it's a credit to Sidney Poitier that he held it together. It helps to have two leads who, even when they weren't getting along, had such fantastic chemistry with one another. Both of them seem free to explore their comedy boundaries through most of it, although the plot is a bit simplistic, it's fine because of what it allows to happen.
Also, some familiar faces to today's audiences make appearances. Breaking Bad's Jonathan Banks has a role as a minor prisoner antagonist and Craig T. Nelson plays the abusive Deputy Warden who attempts to break Wilder.
