There Will Be Blood 2007
This movie is great because it’s not an allegory for anything. It’s about exactly what it’s about. Even the “symbolic” stuff people like to reference — the oil that covers Plainview is like the blood of Christ; the wells he builds are like big capitalistic dicks penetrating the land, or whatever — comes from over-reading rather than over-writing. PTA expands the character study to dizzying heights and respects the audience enough to not pull any punches on how he feels about the balance between ambition and greed.
