a masterpiece - had been on my radar for a while and so glad i checked this out. it’s an almost 2.5 hour drama about a west virginia mining town trying to join forces and fight back against union busters and while that may not sound like the most exciting story, there is not a single dull moment throughout the runtime

fantastic script with such well written characters, incredible cinematography that ranges from lush, vivid forests to noir-like interiors with dark shadows and overcast faces and a killer ensemble of character actors elevating the already great material. absolutely loved every part of this

wow! what a fantastic screenplay. all of the stories and characters mixed so well and the dialogue is so expertly
written - saw some reviews calling this “novelistic” which i wholeheartedly agree with in the best way. i love novels! its gorgeously shot too - the new criterion blu-ray looks stunning and made me very nostalgic for home. i could feel the humidity

ending kind of threw me for a loop - not sure how to feel about all of that but really, really loved this overall. checking out another sayles from the library ASAP

I really loved it and I have a lot of conflicting thoughts about loving it, same with Rosemary's Baby. Director's actions aside, this was incredible. Everything about it just clicked for me and the pacing and reveals were perfect. Really boundary-pushing and well-made movie. Especially the end, was not expecting... that. I have issues talking about movies like this because everyone already knows they're masterpieces so I'll just say it was excellent and I loved it a lot.

So stupid but lots of fun. Wished I had seen this in theaters… the last stretch is truly as wild as everyone said it was. Also, one of the least “scary” horror films I have seen in my life but the insane premise makes up for that. Enjoyed it a lot! 🙆‍♀️👹
