Makes way more sense when you remember it’s written by the same guy as Jacob’s Ladder the same year. Not at all what I expected based on what I got through cultural osmosis. Pretty insane actually!

This kind of maudlin neorealism rarely hits for me, but I do miss when Bradford Young shot at least a film a year. Definitely most interesting when the identities are blending and I wish that had been more the focus.

Once Igor appears on screen the movie shifts to his perspective. (Or, in a way, it clarifies the perspective it already had.) Baker expects us to be impressed that Igor views Ani as a human being. He seems to expect the same praise for himself.

I’m not impressed. I’m impressed by his skills as a filmmaker. But I prefer a straight dude voyeur director to spare us the self-righteousness.

Heterosexuality is a woman being like "I am risking my life to study the minutiae of volcanos" and her husband being like "my goal is to row a canoe down a river of lava!"
