American History X handles complex themes in the least subtle ways, and tells you more than it needs to. All the potentially emotional moments feel so contrived that the intended moral messages come off shallow and generic. The use of slow-mo, gregorian choir music, and ‘metaphorical’ black-and-white result in a film that is more a crowd pleaser than the deep, artsy flick it’s trying to be. I mean, seriously? Fat neo-nazi throws out the one black jelly bean conveniently on top in a bowl of white ones?

The first third of this movie admittedly was pretty underwhelming. I felt like I was watching the same, once-riveting trailer I had seen about twelve hundred times prior, except in a theater. Thankfully things started to get going, but by that time I could barely say “gamer” before I was in total shock.
