(Sono- 2/22)
It's a Kafkaesque romp, tying together a cluster of nonsensical surrealist events that don't speak for themselves. I could see the satire and social commentary in places, but the film as a whole is intentionally left to the viewer's interpretation.
The horror for sure stems from not knowing what exactly is happening- also amounting to a deep source of frustration and anguish for everyone involved- a classic Kafkaesque trope to say the least.
I personally, interpret this as…
Sono (1/22)
Sono's message is tacitly feminist- except that he caters to the male gaze a lot; Most scenes blur the line between film and porn.
Even if one were to cast that aside- Sono is genuinely terrible at writing characters and plots- hence an overreliance on transgressive and iconoclastic elements- which supplement the lack of the writing basics one needs for crafting a decent narrative.
Besides Sono didn't breach the matters of female sexuality and prostitution with care at all. It's shallow, dull, and histrionic- like a film trying to make a statement- but failing.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Employing a red herring to create a false sense of security and then absolutely demolishing it in the last 10 minutes. Makes the slow-burner of a plot worth it.
