One of the best examples of how good something can be if the people involved truly care about what they’re making.
Somehow exceeds expectations, even after roughly 12 or more rewatches.

Enjoyed the B&W with the interspersed color bits at the beginning.
“I wanted to open the film at the moment when the characters were closest to each other and from there they would go further and further apart”
I think it’s possible there’s a more interesting movie planned here that wasn’t ultimately executed. I could argue Fai and Ho are never really close enough to elicit an emotional response to seeing their relationship deteriorate.
The other part of me thinks…
The initial extended sequence was perfect, so it was interesting to find out that bit was originally written as a short.
I would have to watch the rest of the movie again to accurately sum up my feelings overall. The length and series of events was or wasn’t wholly necessary to drive home how emotionally taxing Beau’s journey truly is.
The end was perhaps just as well done as the beginning. Visually impressive and thematically oppressive, the best transition to credits I’ve seen in recent memory.
