The Retirement Plan 2023
A sloppy action film with a few good gags and a Mcguffin that is never explained. Kinda broke down in act 3. Nic Cage is as much himself as usual, and that's good enough for me.

This movie is, maybe accidentally, an allegory for Disney's corporate greed. It's hard not to connect the movie's villain with the company's notoriously litigious copyright practices and refusal to allow their works to fall into the public domain. (Also this is another animated movie about wishes where Harvey Guillen plays a charmingly annoying lil guy, but Puss in Boots was so much better). Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire 2023
Making a derivative work isn't a cardinal sin, as long as you don't do what Zack Snyder does here with Rebel Moon. Aside from the admittedly cool visuals, the use and subversion of genre tropes in this movie are all it has going for it. The movie has nothing to say about imperialism, hope, and destiny that wasn't already said in better films. I really don't want a director's cut this time unless the entire movie is rewritten or the countless slow-motion action scenes are sped up to be in real time. That would shave off at least 30 minutes.
