Hard to take seriously. The images look so contrived that I hesitate to even call this a film. Film is moving images, but images should have an ontological basis, as Bazin would have said. Had a few good laughs anyway.

Wonderful contemplative piece by Wang Bing. Aesthetically reminiscent of Still Life by Iranian filmmaker Sohrab Shahid Saless.
Thematically similar to Tie Xi Qu, but on a more humble scale and less explicit in its politics (there is no spoken language or extradiegetic text to provide context).

Beau Is Afraid 2023
A tiresome viewing experience. Rather than depicting the main character's anxieties with any sincerity, Aster seems more concerned with convincing the audience that his movies are "totally fucked up". The maximalist formalism seemed audacious at first, but the film ended up becoming a misanthropic mess that just wouldn't end.
