This was bad….. but it did bad better than any other movie did at the time or has done since. Truly could be considered one of the first of its kind. And for that I love it. Needed more Lee Grant tho. But maybe then it would’ve actually been good so never mind.

Up the Down Staircase 1967
The best out of the “rookie teacher in a bad school” movies I’ve seen. Sandy Dennis gives a balanced performance and she doesn’t overdo it as most tend to do. She just tries to be a regular English teacher and make her class interesting. She doesn’t try to stand out necessarily, she simply makes her class accesible and does what she can within her capabilities. Solid acting, interesting plot and some very cool camera work makes this a four star movie for me. Better than Blackboard Jungle for being less melodramatic and more realistic.

I was motivated to watch this film after learning that Hedy considered her role as Marvin Myles to be her favorite out of all of her performances. After watching the film, I can see why. Hedy completely carries the film on her back, not just with her looks obviously, but she has a presence that surpasses even her performance in Dishonored Lady, which I consider one of her better roles.
