In a movie featuring a murderous gangster, a Terminator-esque side-piece full of jealous rage, and ruthless loan sharks, the biggest villain of all is the landlord. Truly a film for our times.

Hell or High Water 2016
Expertly scripted modern day western by Taylor Sheridan. Also well directed by David Mackenzie, though not spectacular in that regard. Just gets the job done really well. Pine and Foster are amazing, with Bridges earning his Oscar buzz. It's simply a great character story about two brothers with a singular goal but differing boundaries as to what they'll do to get there.

Hacksaw Ridge 2016
Excellent character study set against the backdrop of a war movie. Even though the action doesn't set in until the third act, the first 2/3 of the film is rife with great character work, boosted by an awards-worthy performance by Andrew Garfield (the best of his career).
