Following Stoker’s novel, Murnau and Herzog’s films, this is probably the last great modern Tragedy.
Despite the evident limits of a major production Eggers’ authoriality shines again after the bland The Lighthouse and The Northman, without reaching, though, the heights of The Witch.

The Substance 2024
Not realistic, not grotesque, not surrealist, not sophisticated, not trashy, not classy… this film goes nowhere, it is stylistically incoherent and leaves you with nothing but a mild bitter aftertaste.
Every shot seems to be so naive, if not vulgar; same for the editing. Fargeat had such a big ambition and apparently so little know-how. It looks like the director was playing like an infant in a room full of expensive and extremely difficult games for grownups.
