Portrait of a Lady on Fire 2019
This is one of my favorite movies ever and this is only my second time watching it. Why? Because it’s absolutely gut wrenching. This film is such a powerful love letter to women and their relationships with each other. It’s a story of learning someone intimately then learning how to say goodbye to those moments; those images you have of one another. Memories will have to be enough, and that’s tragic. But they absolutely made the most of their brief…

I cried 5 times. There will never be a voice or a soul like her. She understands music so intimately and had full command of the craft. So stunning and charismatic and gone too fucking soon. This doc is a very visceral portrayal of her turmoil and some of the lowest moments in her life. I appreciated getting context of what she was experiencing when writing specific songs. I’ve found even more appreciation for her music through this. She was a musical genius and I stand by that <3

West Side Story 2021
Dance white boys dance!!!
I was truly expecting this to be another sucky musical movie adaptation but it was honestly fantastic. The vocals were so stunning at times and the choreography was lively and theatrical as god intended. Several times I said out loud "this is so pretty" because of how the colors pop in a lot of scenes. Very thankful they hired REAL Puerto Rican people to play the Puerto Rican characters and they highlighted the racism and misogyny with more depth than I expected. I think this finally does what the racist brown-face original film sought to achieve. A definite rewatch.
