The Only Girl in the Orchestra 2023
While the subject of the film's accomplishments are laudable, this film feels more like a human-interest piece from a news magazine like 60 Minutes than an Oscar-nomination-worthy film in its own right. I guess I just feel like there's more important subjects, or that someone making a movie about their aunt doesn't rise to the level of uncanny access or vision that I associate with the best of the best documentaries.

A Real Pain 2024
Eisenberg and Culkin shine in what I can only describe as the best Woody Allen movie not involving Allen. It strikes an amazing balance between comedy and drama, seamlessly switching between the two, but the ups and downs of emotion and quick shifts in mood are such a defining part of Culkin's character that it makes sense.

Sing Sing 2023
Perhaps it's just the prison setting, but this movie gave me hardcore Shawshank vibes. The fact that much of the cast was playing themselves and that I didn't realize this until the end is a testament both to their talent as actors, their humanity as incarcerated individuals, and the audacity and genius of the filmmakers to blend reality and fiction to this degree.
