That was brutally horrible, but that is a great depiction of Vietnam.
I heard somewhere that most war films happen to be funded by the US military which is why your Top Guns and Forest Gumps make war look half fun. However, I think it’s easy to tell this is not a positive depiction.

Some story. Hard to believe that it really happened. Danny Boyle made the story so realistic using the cameras. It almost felt like a home movie in some parts which builds this connection to the audience, making the film more real and engaging.
Another fine detail that made the film realistic was the tube from his water tank. The shots were it came streaming up made the scene where the contents were urine, so much more gross and sickening.

Strong film with a strong message. You know it’s going to be a deep film when the first two images are as powerful as a burning church and a segregated water fountain.
The acting from Hackman and Dafoe is just an art form.
