In my youth, I was taught to see Korea from the west-centric lens propagated in my west-centric schools and in the west-centric media I consume. That is, South = Good, North = a missile-crazed, dictator-worshipping, starving nation.
My later foray into Korean cinema and media (read as: kpop and kdramas), were my first teachers who showed me the extent of how incorrect this was. It was motivated by geopolitical (West-centric) interests and cultivated by racism.
