What a gem this film is. I’m honestly dumbfounded at how this movie was filmed in 1972, but between the bombastic jazz soundtrack, the blurred neon lights, the hums and roars of the cars, and the almost French New Wave editing, Hairpin Circus was a wonderful surprise. Pure vibes from start to finish and seeping with style in every facet. The Substance 2024
Fun, if pretty shallow all around. Very poorly paced, though, and I think if this were a tight 90 I would have enjoyed it more. I think this does fall apart a bit in the third act, too, but the New Year’s show scene was a standout even if completely off the rails.
