Contempt 1963
Contempt is easily one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen. There’s dazzling use of bright colors in contrast to neutral tone locations, delicate blocking and scope composition that allow performers to really live in their tastefully decorated environments, and the unusually beautiful effect of lens distortion as the camera sweeps over idyllic Italian vistas.
Narratively, the whole Fritz Lang/The Odyssey film aspect is largely just the backdrop for a story of the dissolution of a marriage. I could…

The Room 2003
As funny as this movie is, I don’t think it’s often discussed how boring it is too. Tommy Wiseau has way too little screen time and is the only one properly hamming it up consistently. There should be more going on than merely bad soap opera. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of charmingly bad things, such as the framed spoon picture or various line deliveries, but there are both good and bad movies much more funny and enjoyable.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 2023
Unnecessary and largely uninspired.
The action is often covered with murky CGI, shot too close, and lacks the clarity and energy of finer films. The film itself is bloated, with an exceptionally long first two acts even if only the second reaches ‘check my watch’ territory. The quality of the set pieces is disappointing on a variety of…

The Curse 2023
One of the most baffling modern works of art, in the fact it exists at all and what it manages to achieve. The Curse is a satire of today, a story about despicable people that’s impossible to look away from. It’s about authenticity, generosity, relationships, personal histories, and more. It has to be the most scathing depiction of the hypocrisy of the “socially/culturally/economically conscious” wealthy, depicting these figures as they really are instead of how they see themselves or want to…
