The quality of the kills really elevated an uneven film full of unlikable characters. In fact it felt almost like two movies stitched together for the first act. The only thing holding the two initially unrelated stories together was the intensity of the death scenes, even as they slip into the increasingly strange and inexplicable, and in spite of what was clearly a limited practical effects budget. Obviously the director knew what was of the utmost important, blood and death.
