  Just an absolute fucking feat. I kind of don’t care that it drags, that the humour can be “blink and you’ll miss it” — these characteristics are really just in service to the experiment that is this film and on this rewatch I’ve come to appreciate the richness of that idea. The idea that, no matter how many times I watch this thing, I’m going to get something new out of it. It’s a game, and I’m here to play it. 

  The nightclub sequence is also just one of the most mind-boggling and lively things ever put to screen.

  What is there to say about this film that can even be said; that isn't self evident? The culmination of forty years of directing, and another forty of lived experience, The Boy and the Heron is about everything. The precipice between life and death, grief and loss, war, violence, what it means to live at all. Miyazaki doesn't answer these questions -- he's smart enough and lived long enough to know answers don't exist. The alternate (much more fitting) title…
