It’s Keke Palmer, it’s SZA, it’s a love letter to Baldwin Hills and South LA, and it’s a very fun take on Friday. Hard not to enjoy and impossible not to be charmed.
If this were the first brick thrown at Stonewall, it would’ve bounced. At its best, it’s an ambitious multi-genre story of a trans woman trying to reconcile her past with the new life she’s built for herself.
However. As it is, it’s a movie that can only assume the stupidest of its audience because it is the product of a director/writer profoundly out of his depth. For whatever its good intentions may be, it is confidently wrong in multiple departments…
She’s not mothering. The movie’s thematic ambitions around family dynamics and trauma were interesting. But it feels like a junior effort in both writing and direction — scattered tonally and plotwise with a monster that boldly asks, “can annoyance be horror?” Sorry Hunter, you deserved a more fun movie for your final girl premiere.
