Hoyyyyever, I did come into this with faith in the Koepp-Soderbergh combo off of the strength of Presence (still my favorite American release so far this year) and they didn't disappoint. Tongue-in-cheek, stylish, kinda sexy directing mixed with this tight storytelling made for a really compelling spy vignette. Again, this genre is not my normal cup of tea because the writing and characters are usually what fall short for me, but this was a fun exception to the norm
I think people will see this and think it's not "un-American" enough. Meaning it doesn't critique the Military-industrial complex enough or provide arthouse visual motifs that abstractly convey the fear and horror of war. Some might say the thin narrative doesn't allow the audience to latch onto any character or overarching themes.
I believe the grounded and technical approach the cinematography and sound design took, the emphasis on characters' faces, skin, sweat, blood, flesh and viscera, the silent and still…

Budget blown on set production and practical effects. The score was super solid and even moving some moments, other moments its placement felt awkward.
It felt like the twist ending was a cop-out that ignored what I think are the two most feasible outcomes: let the 'haunting' be a result pf the group's desperation and mania that makes it collapse in on itself or let the monster be a real seaweed brain zombie they have to burn down
