Exceptional. Less so about the murders than about using the murders to examine toxic masculinity, the purpose of police (justice or order?) in a dictatorship, runaway obsession with being the hero by men who are far too incompetent to ever succeed, and much more. A movie deeply angry and disappointed with Korean society for its treatment of women. Zodiac does not exist without this movie, but Zodiac is really pretty watered down compared to this. Parasite and Mickey 17 may be more explicitly political, but I think this movie has more to say than either. Masterpiece.

Fun! No major thoughts, just a star off for weaker acting from Katz, inconsistent effects, and some odd choices from the characters. Generally entertained

Fiddler on the Roof 1971
Pretty good! The first hour is noticeably weaker, with more filler-y songs, a few weird cuts, and a good bit of nothing. Once the character drama really kicks off, it gets real good. Beautifully shot, wonderfully written and performed, and deeply compelling. Enjoyed.

Weaknesses: The score sucks, it clashes with the tone constantly (the very first fight scene is supposed to be cool, but sounds… quirky?). Mackie’s performance can be too stiff and stoic, with much of the conspiracy dialogue given robotically with steely eyes, which doesn’t work when we’ve seen Sam emote much more in other appearances. I think this being a sequel to 2008’s The…
