    Before Halloween was Black Christmas.

The film still holds up well to today’s standards and even surpasses some modern slashers. The POV shots (though a bit jarring at times due to the handheld nature of the camerawork) were a great way of entering the mind of the killer. It’s moody AF… but lacks any surprise.

The montages were well done and so surreal. I loved the first act’s sequence of Thomas (Nicholas Hoult) arriving to Orlok’s (Bill Skarsgard) castle. This film had so many references. Yes, the studio hallway and bathroom is a definite nod to The Shining. Of course, the body horror elements pay homage to Cronenberg. The aerobics show is definitely hot and NSFW like Eric Prydz’s Call on Me music video. Heck, even the Bernard Herrmann’s score from Hitchcock’s Vertigo makes an appearance. But this movie so much more than the sum of its parts. And even knowing all these references still won’t prepare yourself for…
