  Few directors have as much love for their characters as James Whale. The ensemble cast and humor belie the film's acute horror with shades of Jane Eyre in the locked-up relative in the attic. Boris Karloff's wordless performance is menacing and wonderful.

  All the girlies who took post-colonial lit love Claire Denis (and I very much do). The Tindersticks soundtrack is perfectly languid. Keep an eye out for John C. Reilly. This is what the pandemic felt like if you were in love.

  Jane Campion is the greatest, as far I’m concerned. Also the only role I’ve ever liked Benedict Cumberbatch in, mostly because his weird physicality is perfect for the character of repressed ranch owner Phil.
