My friend who I watched this with said “this might be the most Italian film ever made” and I think he’s right. Awesome grimy poliziotteschi, Raymond Chandler-esque plot, incredible soundtrack, absurdly funny (the English dubbing is unintentionally hilarious). Easy to see why guys like Tarantino were obsessed with this stuff.

After Hours 1985
I love movies about a guy having the worst day of his life. Surprisingly dark and very funny. Also a great time capsule of 80s New York that touches on just how different things are from the 60s and 70s. If you liked Blue Velvet, Beau Is Afraid, or Uncut Gems you’ll love this

Longlegs 2024
David Fincher meets David Lynch. Ominous vibes, weird and somewhat unexplained twist near the end that doesn’t quite stick the landing, but ultimately a unique and eerie take on a satanic horror police procedural. I’m a sucker for this sort of thing so your mileage may vary.

Nosferatu 2024
Dark, rich, Gothic, and evil. The classic vampyre story presented in a way that feels fresh but also timeless. An ode to German expressionism with its own unique visual language and careful attention to detail.
No one is doing epic period pieces like Eggers right now; it takes a lot of control and restraint as a filmmaker to make a movie like this today.
