  The sense of scale and weight in this Moby Dickish animation film is spectacular. Great story and world, effective stuff. But no pay-off for the witch character, so film just ends when it should just up the ante.

  Made concurrently with the manga I think, so the story is a mess. But the world is very interesting. Film also drops some body horror on you out of the blue and it is lovely.

  Hopefully will work as a renaissance for 2D animation. Not that there is a lack of talented people working with it, but a rebewed interest from the public will perhaps increase the demand for films like this. On a technical level this film is flawless. Story and characters are a bit too safe, but here is to hoping the studio's next film will take some more creative risks.
