What if Superman had been selfish and depraved despite his wholesome upbringing? This movie attempts to answer that question. It was entertaining, but I felt the story was shallow and fell a bit flat. It is a well acted film for the horror genre, but was needlessly gory, and ultimately presented a purely evil villain instead of doing the literary work of examining human depravity through the lens of a creature able to act without concern for human punishment. Ultimately it was just unsatisfying and disappointing.

This is not your typical horror film in that it doesn't exist simply to create moments of suspense and shocking violence. Although there are scary moments (children unable to discern fantasy from reality should not watch it) this is primarily a story of a family overcoming tragedy and taking care of each other. It is beautiful in its simplicity and I appreciated the writer's willingness to simply allow the setting and premise to exist without the need to complicate matters with backstory that truly wasn't relevant to the plot.

Look, I know that this film does not really deserve five stars, except that it truly, truly does. Moreover, if you disagree, there is something fundamentally wrong inside of you that cannot be fixed. 😬

It gets an extra half a star because leaving this film I was truly on the lookout for velociraptors in the parking lot. It seems so less realistic by today's standards, but it was a cinematic marvel in its day.

But, one of the worst book adaptations ever.
