The Killing Fields 1984
The story of the Khmer Rouge’s Year Zero genocide unquestionably deserves to be told, but I wish we lived in a world where that alone would be considered worth telling, and solely from the Cambodian point of view. There’s a harrowing and beautifully shot Herzog-esque tale of horror and survival here, but buried in a white guilt narrative.
How deep and unconscious are the biases buried? None of the Cambodian dialogue is translated into English unless we see a Cambodian…
