    back to the BFI more Visconti. For all its resplendence, this film opens with the reverberations of a revolution and closes with the sounds of the gunshots of a bourgeois counter revolution. I forgot how much it is about how the Prince of Salina (played by Burt Lancaster) is the only person allowed a moral conscience about world-history. We see him become increasingly isolated from a decadent world in which he has the absolute respect of everyone, but as the ball continues he cannot bring himself to say what he sees: that on some level things staying the same troubles and disgusts him.
