The conflict in Booksmart was oversimplified and lacked depth save for Amy’s relationship with Hope. The premise driving the plot (two bookish teenagers who want a taste of the party scene learn that their superficially shallow peers are, in fact, humans) felt contrived. On the plus side the characters were endearingly quirky despite the facile, hyperliberal world they resided in. The situational humor of high school hit its mark. This film will get many laughs out of you despite its flaws. Also, the pool scene was a work of art.
