All About My Mother 1999
Teared up many times.
This is my first Almodóvar, and I was totally gripped. Weaving overarching commentary on the nature of identity, death, forgiveness and the connections that make us human complimented by a showstopping heartfelt performance by main lead Cecilia Roth. Almodóvar takes the plot in directions that feel like they're straight out of a soap opera, but does it with such care that it never feels out of left field. Shout-out to Agrado's monologue to the theatre hall near the end.

This is delightful. A kooky old lady inadvertently drives a gang of criminals to ruin. Mrs. Wilberforce is such an earnest and sweet woman and Alec Guinness' "Professor Marcus" is so slimy and sneering he could be a Rik Mayall character.

I appreciate how uncomfortable and personal this is. Aronofsky ditches his usual surrealist fare for something more down to earth. Mickey Rourke puts up potentially one of the greatest performances of all time as The Ram, a man beaten down and worn by years of the only thing he thinks he can do.
