  The scene in Eddie’s office of Shelly, flirtatiously bumbling from people pleasing to her delulu naïveté, while the reality of her dwindling circumstances begins to, if only momentarily, seep through the cracks of her infantile voice…  
  Says more about the women used and discarded by society’s objectification than the entirety of The Substance. If only the rest of the film was as tightly observed and executed.
