Touches upon a number of subjects whose grouping theme is ostensibly ‘brutality’ (e.g. of the US immigrant experience, of the wartime and post-war Jewish experience, of the American Dream, of drug abuse), yet brings little if any clarity or resolution to any of them.
Very plausible that’s what was intended, ‘brutality’ being an innate and senseless part of the human condition or whatever. But for a film whose final line is “It is the destination – not the journey”, quite…
