Nothing about any of these characters conveys any sort of emotional interiority or depth; nobody here is a human being. Everything that exists in this movie exists entirely on the surface and is spelled out in the most unambiguous of terms. Everyone who raved on this should have their head examined.

Diary of an African Nun 1977
This deserves to sit alongside the works of Scorsese, Ferrara, and Schrader in the pantheon of the cinema of Catholic guilt.

Aux quatre coins 1949
This short film, made by a then 20 year old Rivette, is interesting as a precursor to both his career and his influence on his cohorts at Cahiers. It is clearly apeing from the dreamy style of Jean Cocteau, but he is also toying with an abstract editing scheme and purposefully incoherent juxtapositions of shots and blocking as a means of creating a sort of "choose your own adventure" narrative. The result is clearly a student film, but one that makes for a fascinating experiment.
