Anora 2024
my initial reaction is that anora felt like a modern retelling of don’t tell mom the babysitter’s dead (1991), which roger ebert called “a consumerist, escapist fantasy for teenage girls” so this actually kinda tracks lol. it’s a working theory, may revisit later.
i loved early on hearing t.A.T.u.’s 2002 smash hit “all the things she said” like yes we are young dumb and alive!! a brilliant and devastating contrast to the ending’s near silence.
