I didn't expect much from the movie since the book is so long - > 1000 pages - and I couldn't imagine compressing it in 2 hours, but I did loved and enjoyed it and it was far above my expectations. However, frankly speaking if I didn't read the book and I was already obsessed with it I'd have understood nothing, the transitions are confusing, the time skipping is crazy, you can only get the characters by imagining the book's version of them.
But I don't blame the director, and I think it can't be done any better as a movie.
