How hard is it to just make a non-canon flick based on the xenomorph ecology?

Why do they always have to make a homage script crossing over familiar scenarios (in this case referencing the first four movies) to justify green-lighting this project?

What was this film even supposed to be? What does it mean outside of the corporatist/slave-labour theme? In this case Romulus was completely shallow in delivering such a theme.
