Down with Love is such a charming Doris Day-Rock Hudson homage. I was enjoying myself so much watching this, I forgot the plot was lifted straight from Sex and the Single Girl. I was also shocked Peyton Reed could make a film this good, and I loved so many of the little details/references. It’s obvious how much he loves the films he’s recreating.
I’m also very thankful for Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor’s decision to include a musical number for the film.

  • The Tree of Life

I love, love, love The Tree of Life, and perhaps the extended cut even more. Terrence Malick fills every frame with a warmth and love that I think is missing from his other works. The family dynamics, the generational trauma, and the way the film portrays growing up and realising things about your past (especially the painful and confusing parts) is incredibly moving.

    “You didn’t invent my sadness”.

Petite Maman is the first film that truly took me out of myself and made me feel restored. I don't think I've felt this way about a film for a very long time.

The moment La Musique du Futur kicked in and that lovely little montage between Nelly and Marion began, my heart soared and the floodgates opened.

It's beautiful, deeply affecting and perfect in its simplicity, without a hint of pretension.

  • The Banshees of Inisherin

As expected, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are class acts, but the stand-out performance for me is Kerry Condon with her incredible on-screen command. Barry Keoghan plays a little freak again, but he does it so well that I don't mind. Plus, he delivers one of the most beautifully heartbreaking scenes.
For me, Pádraic may be one of the most relatable protagonists because who among us hasn't worried about being the dullest person in the room? And I've had my world punched in the gut by close friends suddenly deciding I wasn't good enough for them plenty of times whilst growing up.
