If the viewer isn’t supposed to interpret the film’s countless ambiguities through a political lens, then I seriously struggle to understand which questions we’re even supposed to grapple with. Yes, exploitation and abuse (of religious minorities, of immigrants, of sex, of power, of drugs) is bad.
What are we left with, if we remove the boogeyman of “”politics””? Trauma, for trauma’s sake. And that the American Dream is a lie.
