A classic of repressed protestants and sumptuous food, but also a feast of elderly hairdos. Some tremendous hair choices across the cast in this one, from the driver in the kitchen with his pageboy and chinbeard to the guy with the frazzled bald horseshoe to the various Nordic updos, to say nothing of General Ringo Starr's whole deal. I think Criterion edited out the turtle scene between last time I watched this and now, which might be good, I'm not sure, that scene is hard to take in a way that wasn't intended at the time I think.

You simply cannot go wrong with Borzage and Lubitsch arranging Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper in a jewel heist rom-com! I kind of wish Cooper's character hadn't been such a boob for most of the movie, but he has to be a rube in some ways so it does make sense. Just an old-fashioned hoot.

Absolutely amazing, and holy shit Rob Scheider. Maybe the best musical I've ever seen.
