I'm Still Here 2024
amending this entry as I want to give this a proper review. Despite having been spent close to two weeks in Rio in 2018, I had very little knowledge about the military dictatorship in Brazil. Through the powerful story of one family, the brutality of this regime unravels and we witness their lives torn apart by the coup. It’s sad and a little long but overall very worthy of winning the Best International Feature Film. The home movie camera footage is devastating.

The Juniper Tree 1990
Heavily Bergman coded. The plot is a little slow, even for me, and lacked a clear form. I think the beautiful cinematography and hypnotic landscapes partly makes up for this. I now want to frolic in the Icelandic hills.
Plus Baby Björk is super cool and I will forever be drawn to stories of folklore and witches.

The Spirit of the Beehive 1973
A beautiful and haunting film, set in a run down town devastated by the Spanish civil war about two sisters who go on the hunt for Frankenstein. It is the kind of movie I imagine I will keep returning to.
I’m not sure why this movie resonated with me so much. Maybe because, like Ana, I remember the first time I learned about death and the moment the world suddenly looked darker. Maybe it’s the dreamy, hazy use of colour…
