what got me on my recent rewatch of FLCL, was tsurumaki & enokido's willingness to centre & sympathise with the contemporary youth & youth culture, while making fun of their own generation of pseudo-intellectual otaku. it carries eva's themes of being a child unwillingly thrust into a confusing an alienating adult world you're not prepared for, and reframes them as both more mundane, and more fantastical, and more modern (for 2001). and also turns some of it into "my dad won't shut up…

feels like it came straight from a teenager's brain, as such really takes the internal world of a teen seriously. no wonder it had fellow teens both in a chokehold, and also hating it for being "pretentious" and "dumb but it thinks its smart". i get how one gets there at an insecure age, but it didnt necessarily feel like it was trying to have all the answers, idk, it embodies itself fully

the fact that i (noted musical hater) loved this despite its musical theatre theming should speak volumes. those aspects feel intentionally half-formed & incomplete in a really satisfying way, and aided thoroughly by beautiful shot composition and artfully dreamy direction.
but really i was sold from the extreme wide shot of a criss-crossing brutalist covered bridge structure, while two characters talked. i love cities
