El Holmes

Don't tell my PhD supervisor but I spend more time analysing film than my data.

(Of course Arrival is my favourite film I'm a Linguist)

Incredibly disappointing. The acting was fine but the script they're working with is absolutely pointless, the pacing is poor, the film feels like its ending well before it actually ends, and its visually manipulative: it only shows you snippets of these fights to make you think you've seen a fight but in reality you haven't. The only actual positive I have for this is Bear McCreary's score and a handful of impressive shots scattered throughout.

Really did nothing for me. Yes the production design is fun but the acting isn't great, the score is forgettable, it lacks focus, the lighting is pretty poor, the leads have no chemistry and it's just silly without purpose.

Some potential here but far too ambitious. I really think this could have worked in the right hands because it has some genuinely great ideas but here the execution is disappointingly amateurish: the dialogue is heavy-handed, the themes and motifs are over-explained, the score is misused, and the editing and sound editing is haphazard. A lot of the cinematography is also flat and shaky; however, this film still manages to have some of the most gorgeous shots I've seen in…

This was amazing; I haven't laughed this hard in years. The cast absolutely nail it, the soundtrack is bombastic in all the right ways, the pacing and structure was spot-on, the camerawork, locations, and lighting were solid, and the writing was unbelievably funny, impressively character driven, and honestly really moving at parts.

I cannot recommend this enough; this is a teen comedy classic in the making.
