Incredible how they managed to make a movie with no dialogue so emotional. I really enjoyed the animation style, and the backgrounds were beautiful. The story was short and sweet, but had an ending that really makes you think.

Loved the first half of the movie, then it kind of went off the rails but pulled itself back in for a great ending. Presented really intriguing ideas about self-identity, loathing, and jealousy. I think a movie did its job when you’re thinking about what it meant by certain details for days after watching it. My favorite parts were, of course Sebastian Stan was incredible, and then the score was perfect, I’m surprised it wasn’t nominated for original score. Really enjoyed it overall and would love to learn more on rewatch.

Eggers is so good at setting the atmosphere in his period pieces. Everything in this film draws you to some gothic, Baltic region of the world where you can be immersed in its culture and architecture. The dialogue is so natural, which is a credit to the amazing performances by the cast who clearly did their research on regional accents. That said, one of my few issues was the audio mixing, I struggled to understand the whispering voices at times.…
Parts of this movie felt tough to get through, which is why I felt like I was going to be low on this, but as I let it play out it just came together beautifully. It’s clear that everybody wants to be someone they’re not. For the father, he wanted to be viewed as traditionally successful and authoritative, and he let his pride disrupt his family.
