    Captain America: Brave New World

    ★★★

Captain America: Brave New World has a few moments where it shows you the film it could have been. But ultimately, it rushes plot beats and never gives enough space for its emotional beats.

In concept, the film has a strong story that -in true Captain America fashion- is fairly topical and relevant. A conflict revolving around a president whose judgement is compromised by his family life, short temper, and secret political liabilities should make for a compelling film. The…

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl

Really, the only value you can gain from Sharkboy and Lavagirl is as a 'so bad it's good' watch. Even for a kids movie, it's incoherent, poorly written, and -despite its best attempts- unfunny. There's nothing to write home about in terms of performances, either. Though, I'll give credit to the actors for almost always giving 100% commitment to the dialogue. It doesn't make make the scenes work in the traditional sense, but it sure is entertaining.

Honestly, there's not much I can say about Wicked that hasn't already been said. It's a great watch, with strong visuals and superbly executed musical numbers. The cast is charming and engaging all around. And do I even need to mention the vocal talent of Wicked's leads?

Story wise, there's enough thematic material on racism, sexism, social pressures, politics, etc. to fill half a dozen PhD dissertations (though, I suspect many of those dissertations were already written about the source…

    Sonic the Hedgehog 3

    ★★★

"Oh yeah, it's a kids movie."

That's the phrase that I always return to when thinking about the flaws in Sonic 3. "Why didn't character X just do Y? That would have solved the problem so much faster," or "How did X character get fooled so easily?" The answer is pretty simple: it's a kids movie.

Don't get me wrong, Sonic 3 has its bright spots: fun action, a few good bits of comic relief, and even a decent thematic…
