Gave up, at least for the present, after a single episode of one of the worst screenwriting jobs I've ever seen. Ioan Gruffyd is absolutely wasted in this travesty (I never even got to Justine Waddell's character).

David Copperfield 1999
The casting in this is perfection, the settings somehow look *exactly* as I always pictured them, and the adaptation essentially faithful. My only criticism is that a running time of only three hours for an adaptation of such a hefty book feels like it's rushing through the story at breakneck speed. So much of the humor in Dickens depends on running gags, and while characters like the Micawbers are splendidly portrayed, they're only allowed a scene or two to display…

An adaptation that’s really very faithful to the book, with the exception of moving the setting from New England to…old England! The change actually works with surprising ease, perhaps because the setting wasn’t really very developed in the book, making it a story that could be set almost anywhere. It’s a very cute, sweet little family film, with quite good casting for several of the principle roles and a quaint English village for a backdrop; and it makes a nice counterpoint to the more lavish Disney adaptation that basically wrote a new story for Porter’s characters.
