Remove the obtuse racism out of Griffith and then you get an authentic poetic film. Yes, still a product of its time with numerous conflicting themes, but this one stands out for its true heart (pun intended). Not to mention that Lillian Gish’s sublime performance carries the story all the way to the end, ‘True Heart Susie’ is perhaps Griffiths most honest film. If only he stopped trying to mask his blatant racism with false tolerance and focused more in making this type of films.

Filled with good intentions but…yikes! Terrible script, not even the decent photography and performances by the leads could save it.

Late Spring 1949
Although some of the ideas around marriage didn’t age very well, the essence of the film is still very powerful. It really captures the transition of life as poignant as the transitions of season. As all his films this is powerful, elegant and very moving.
