I know it’s a sequel but… beat for beat we had the same shit a different day. Too many cornball moments for my liking (see: sharks in the coliseum). Didn’t love that Lucius somehow spawned from Maximus and Lucilla. Sometimes retconning can be forgiven in the name of camp, I fear this isn’t the case here. Regardless, glad Ridley gave us Paul in a sexy gladiator tunic on his way out the door.
I loved this movie a lot, I definitely hold Robert Eggers to a different standard than most directors, he has helped to push arthouse cinema to the blockbuster genre, and I’m so glad for it. As is classic with Eggers, everything was so spot on period wise. I always admire how much he commits to dialogue accuracy (and other set design/costuming). It was gorgeously shot, which is to be expected. But I was a bit let down by the suspense…
Accidentally deleted my first review. This movie was incredible. I watched it on Thanksgiving, and since I did not go home for it, the premise definitely hit home. Outstanding performances all around, I found myself unexpectedly crying at several parts. Da’vine Joy Randolph gives such a beautiful portrayal of grief. Insane breakthrough performance for Sessa, if he has these kinds of chops in his debut, I can’t wait to see what he does next. Paul Giamatti is also outstanding and…
