I don’t know, he looks older than 17 to me.

This film set itself up to be a story about what it is to be human and the culture of capitalism in which human printing would be allowed; but this is quickly jettisoned in order to become an alien comedy.

I liked that 17 and 18 are different parts of Mickey’s personality - as if 18 had always been there in the recesses of his mind - but if you stop to…

    Delusions of grandeur.

Stylish, but ultimately a bit flat.

The ending was interesting - I don’t believe it to be real - and the individual performances were good but the overall story lacked any real depth. I didn’t really care that much about Shelly, and the daughter storyline just felt lazy.

An incredibly peaceful film, and one that brings the concept of mono no aware firmly to the fore.

Whether you applaud or pity the life of Hirayama, this film leaves you with a lot reflect on. Routine and mindfulness can be powerful tools to develop a happier life, however they can also be a cage to protect you from your own disappointment.

Bloated and indulgent. Definitely one of the more unique films I’ve seen, but it almost uses this as a crutch. The story isn’t strong enough to sustain the 142min run time, with the plot quickly falling off after the Boat. Added to that, the incessant and seemingly random use of the fish eye lens and it’s a frustrating watch. One peek behind the theatrics and bizarre setting and you’ll find an incredibly average film.
